Thomas (Tom) Wade Barnes, 69, passed away suddenly, but peacefully, on July 31,
2025. He was a devoted husband to Jane Wallace Barnes, his partner of 43 years, and a
wonderful father and friend to his children, Kait and Tom Barnes.
He is survived by his wife; his children; their spouses, Klaudia Smith Rubio (Tom) and
Kyle Streicher (Kait); his sisters, Nancy Green and Sheridan Barnes; many beloved
nieces/nephews and cousins like Rob Barnes and Diane Dawtrey; dear friends like
Craig Stephenson and Bob Morrison; and his cherished pets, Tallie (dog) and
Mouser (cat). He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Ruby; his sister,
Mary Anne Traill; and many beloved friends.
Tom’s greatest passion in life was his family. He cherished gatherings filled with
connection and laughter. Later in life, he became the family genealogist, finding great
meaning in researching his family's history. An active and energetic man, Tom ran
marathons, practiced yoga, and became an avid cyclist in retirement, including cycling
across the state of Ohio in 2024. He ran 5Ks with his daughter, encouraged his son to
excel at powerlifting, went bird hunting with his son and his treasured bird dogs, and
never missed a chance to stay moving.
Professionally, Tom dedicated over 30 years to juvenile corrections, where he made a
lasting impact on countless at-risk youth. A library wing now bears his name at the
center where he served.
Tom will be remembered for his sharp sense of humor, warmth, selflessness, and the
deep love he gave his family. He was our steady center and will be deeply missed.
A memorial will be held at a later date with support from Ogle & Paul R. Young Funeral
Home in Oxford. In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom’s name may be made to
