Roy Ridenour, Sr. Obituary

Roy Stanley Ridenour, Sr., age 94, of Orange Park, Florida passed away on Monday, July 20, 2020.

Roy was born to Stanley and Lydia Ridenour on December 16, 1925, in Ft. Hamilton Hospital, Hamilton, Ohio, growing up in Bath, Indiana.  He was a starting player for his junior and senior high school baseball, basketball and football teams. During this time at McGuffey High, he was greatly influenced and coached by “Weeb” Ewbank (Coach of the Baltimore Colts 1958 NFL Championship team).

He graduated from Miami University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and from Indiana University with a Master’s Degree in Health and Safety.

Roy was the father of four children, Terra Shipskie (Paul) of Orange Park, Roy Ridenour, Jr of Orange Park, Marlene Abrams (deceased), and Mark Ridenour of Brookville, Indiana.  He has eight grandchildren; Ashley Slaufman; Joline (deceased), Autumn, Stephen, and Tyler Abrams; Jackson and Joline Ridenour; and Katie Napier.

Roy’s first love, other than his family, was baseball and fastpitch softball.  Roy played several years in the AAA Minor League Baseball and on several state and national championship fast pitch softball teams. 

He was inducted into the Butler County Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame (2013) and the Butler County Baseball Hall of fame in (2015).

Roy was a high school teacher and coach (baseball, basketball and football) for several years in Manatee County, Florida. He introduced the concept of using a simulator for teaching Drivers Education in the State of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Sue Ridenour and a daughter, Marlene Abrams; one granddaughter Joline Abrams and his brother Larry Ridenour of Liberty Indiana.

He is survived by his children, numerous stepchildren and other Loved Ones.

A grave side memorial service, conducted by the Rev. Everett Back, will be held at 11:00 am, on Friday, July 31, 2020 at the College Corner Cemetery, Brookville Pike, West College Corner, Indiana, 47003.

It is requested that any donations in Roy’s memory be made to Haven Hospice, 4200 North West 90th Boulevard, Gainesville, Florida 32606.
