Faithful husband, father, and friend
Robert Gene Laymon, 85, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 21, 2025. Robert, was born September 3, 1939 in Richmond, Indiana to Forest and Mary (Colvin) Laymon. He was the second of four children. Robert, also known as “Bobby” in his early years, grew up in Oxford, OH, graduating from Talawanda High School, before joining the United States Navy in 1957 and serving for three years.
Robert met his wife, Shirley, in 1960 at Coffee Pete’s in Oxford where they were both employed at the time. They were married in Oxford on February 23, 1963. Robert (with his wife Shirley) were residents of Seymour, IN; Shelbyville, IN; Rushville, IN; Ypsilanti, MI; Jackson MI; Arlington, TX; Utica, MI; Schroon Lake, NY; Cumming, GA; and most recently Flower Mound, TX.
Both Robert and Shirley trusted Christ as their personal savior in Jackson, MI in 1975, and together have been lifelong, committed to their Lord, serving in the local church, as well as full-time ministry, for over four decades. In January of 2016, Robert and Shirley celebrated 53 years of marriage. In April of 2016, Shirley went home to be with the Lord.
Robert was a “trusted”, “principled”, and “faithful” husband, family member, friend, co-worker, church leader, and teacher. Robert had many special qualities and abilities. Of particular note was being known for his everyday spiritual disciplines. Robert’s family and friends were witness to his daily Bible study, scripture memory, and prayer times. And, as a prayer warrior for so many people, Robert would faithfully pray for weeks, months, and even years until an answer came.
Robert is survived by his two children, Mike (Gracia) Laymon, and Kathy (Jeff) Cole; four grandchildren (Michael, Victoria, Savannah, and Olivia); and many lifetime friends. Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Shirley (Baker) Laymon; father, Forest Laymon; mother, Mary (Colvin) Laymon; sisters Barbara (Laymon) Leak and Carol (Laymon) Colwell; and brother Larry Laymon.
