David was born in Freeport, Illinois to Helen (nee Needham) and H.G. Hurley on January 10, 1934. He married Carolyn Jennings in 1957 and together they raised their family throughout the northeast and midwest.
David was a minister in the United Methodist Church. His calling took him and Carolyn to many churches throughout the county. He deeply loved the people he served, and they counted him as not just a pastor but also a friend. He pastored churches in Coram, NY on Long Island and Bridgeport, CT before moving back to his birthplace, Illinois. He served in East St. Louis, Waverly, Pekin, Lewistown, LeRoy and Peoria where he retired from Forest Hill UMC in 1995. He and Carolyn later moved to Florida and then to Ohio to be closer to family. Throughout the years of travel, they always kept pets, mostly cats. Their sweet cat of fourteen years, Cindy, has been a constant comfort for Carolyn.
David is the beloved husband of Carolyn (nee Jennings); devoted father of Lisa (Vance) Nagel and Steven (Lisa) Hurley; cherished grandfather of Ian (Kristina) Nagel, Eric Nagel, Clarissa (Chase) Murphy and great grandfather of Benjamin Nagel, Juniper Nagel and Wendell Nagel. He was predeceased by his parents, his in-laws C.A. and Blanche Reed Jennings, and his brother John (Linda) Hurley. He's also survived by many loving family and friends. David's family was very important to him. He officiated the weddings of all his children and grandchildren and baptized all of his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.
