Mildred Land Merkel, 87, born to proud parents, Lynden and Suzie Land on July 6, 1936, in French Lick, IN. She attended French Lick elementary school and West Baden high school. She then attended the Cincinnati Christian University for 2 years and obtained an associates degree. Mildred worked at the Jay C. Store while attending high school and worked at French Lick Springs Hotel as a secretary in the sales department before going to college. While at the Cincinnati Christian University, she met David G. Merkel and they were married on October 17, 1959. In 1960 during the Berlin Crisis, David Merkel’s National Guard Unit was called to active duty, although the wives were not allowed to travel with the unit, this did not stop Mildred; she purchased her own airline ticket and surprised David in Germany. She then spent the next year in Landshut, Germany with David as he served his country. Mildred attended the College of Mount St. Joseph and became the first recipient of a Business Law bachelor’s degree from College of Mount St. Joseph. During her college years, Mildred worked as secretary/office manager for a law office. After graduating from Mount St. Joseph, Mildred continued to serve as a mentor to college students. After graduation, she began her career at Baldwin Piano and Organ Company as the Corporate Director of Human Resources. In 1995 she retired from Baldwin Piano and Organ as Vice President of Personnel. Mildred served in numerous positions at White Oak Christian Church, including the Women’s Ministry, the Children’s Ministry, a Stewardship Committee Member, and the Capital Fund Campaign Manager. She represented several organizations as a Board Member: including Director on the Board of Mt. Healthy Christian Home, the Mason Christian Village, and the Christian Benevolent Association. In addition, Mildred was on the board for the Christian Benevolent Association Foundation for fundraising. In 2008, she was recognized for the accomplishments she made to the Christian Benevolent Association by being inducted into the Christian Benevolent Association Hall of Fame. Mildred passed away on April 27, 2024 in Mason, Ohio at Mason Christian Village. She leaves behind her husband, David G. Merkel; son, Robert (Julie) Merkel; her grandchildren, Cody, Dustin, & Rachel; and her sister, Sue (Frank) Hobson. She is also survived by many nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lynden and Suzie Land and her siblings; Lester Land & Jean (Kenny) Walters. She was a member of White Oak Christian Church and of the Christian Benevolent Association. On Wednesday, May 15th, a Celebration of Life Service will be held for Mildred Merkel at Mason Christian Village, 411 Western Row Rd., Mason, Ohio 45040. Visitation from 1pm to 3pm Celebration service at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mason Christian Village in Mason, Ohio or to White Oak Christian Church.
