Melvin G. Shidler

Melvin Glenn Shidler was born on August 15, 1951 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Beloved husband of Gayle Merriam Shidler (nee Oysler) for 38 years. Loving son of Lois Miller Shidler. Loving father of Sara (Andrew) Brant Guest, Charles (Amber) Brant, Tracie Shidler and Jennifer (Jon) Shidler Piatt. Cherished grandfather of Zane Guest, Jade Brant, Sage Brant, Brianna Shidler and Kayla Powell. Dear brother of Marvin (Debbie) Shidler and Giselle (Ron) Craft. Dear uncle of Scott (Jordan) Garrison, Brian Garrison, Jacob (Amber) Shidler, Adam (Brittany) Shidler and Nathan Shidler. Predeceased by his beloved father Charles Leland Shidler and his beloved uncle David Wesley Miller. Melvin died suddenly of natural causes on August 10, 2020 at the age of 68.
Mel lived in Darrtown and Oxford Ohio for 42 years. He was a project manager with Miami University, managing multi-million-dollar construction projects for most of his career. He was also a veteran of the United States Navy. His hobbies and interests included carpentry, home remodeling, dog obedience training and instructing, cooking and grilling, camping and being an active community member. Mel was an amateur musician and greatly enjoyed playing and listening to music.
He and his wife raced a sailboat for more than a decade and he was a sharp-shooter and active member of the Oxford chapter of the Izaak Walton Lodge. During the years when his children were being raised, Mel and Gayle were active and enthusiastic parents who brought great joy to parenting. He will be greatly missed by everyone who benefited from his consistent love and care.
A celebration of his life is planned for Saturday, October 17th, 2-5 pm at the Izaak Walton Lodge in Oxford, Ohio.
