James was born in Spartanburg, South Caroline to Maria Teresa (nee Ramirez) and Curtis Hoskins on March 24, 1942. He was raised in Lexington, Kentucky and graduated from Lexington Catholic High School. After a year in college, he joined the military and honorably served on active duty, 1959-1963, in the United States Air Force. James was also recognized as an honorary life member of the "Air Defense Team" for his voluntary and faithful service in the ground observer corps.
He is the beloved father of Karen (Curtis) Napier, Lisa Woodrum, and Jonathan (Julianna Pasetto) Hoskins; cherished grandfather of Stephen (Lauren), Ryan (Kayla), Aaron, the late Raymond, Kyle (Breanna), Rachel, Griffin, Marcus, Sydnie, Lillie, Jack, Alex, Gabriel and great-grandfather of Seeley, Lana, Jovie, Cecelia, Eliza, Jaiden, Anika, Addison and Avery; dear brother of Coca Mayo; and special friend of Barbara Alexander.
