Jacob Leonhardt Obituary

Jacob (Jake) F. Leonhardt, 83, of Copley, Ohio passed away on November 11, 2021 in Oxford, Ohio.

Jake was born in Barberton, Ohio to Jacob & Angela Leonhardt on November 26, 1937. He was a graduate of Barberton High School (Class of 1955) and also held degrees from Ohio University (Bachelor of Science – Mechanical Engineering, 1961) and the University of Akron (MBA, 1973). He married his college sweetheart, Phyllis Herbell, on August 27, 1960, then after graduation began a long and distinguished career as an executive in the manufacturing industry. His working career included roles as Vice President of Manufacturing for Air-Maze/Donaldson Co. in Cuyahoga Falls and Director of Manufacturing for Babcock & Wilcox Co. in Barberton. He served his country in the Army Reserves.

Jake was preceded in death by a sister, Diane Anderson, and his wife, Phyllis Leonhardt. Jake is survived by a sister, Betty Kruszewski of Clearwater, Florida; his sons Matt (Melissa) and Jon (Diane), and daughter Susie (Adam) Snell; grandchildren Christopher (Kaylie), Alex, Kevin, Ben, and Jamie Leonhardt, Helen and Lucy Snell; great-grandchildren Madison and Colton Leonhardt.

Jake had a passion for Ohio sports teams, including The Ohio State University, the Cleveland Browns, and the Cleveland Indians. He loved raising his family, and volunteered extensively in the Copley, Ohio community in youth sports as commissioner and coach and in community service as Kiwanis President. Upon his retirement, he and Phyllis built their dream home on several acres of land in the Bath area of Ohio. There they filled their barn with horses and their house with many grandchildren and generations of their beloved dogs.

A private memorial service will be held in the spring to celebrate Jake’s life. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
