Dr. Floye Jean Dockery Obituary

Dr. Floye Jean Dockery, age 95, of Oxford, Ohio, peacefully passed away on the morning of Sunday, June 1, 2025, at Woodland Country Manor. She was born on March 19, 1930, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to the late Fred and Veo (Williams) Thomas.

After graduating Dunbar High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, class of 1946, Jean went on to pursue her passion for education, and nursing, earning her bachelor's degree from the University of San Francisco in 1956. Her dedication to learning continued as she obtained her Masters in Education from Xavier University in 1967 and later achieved a PhD in Nursing from the University of Texas in 1993.

Throughout her distinguished career, Jean made a profound impact in the field of nursing. She began teaching at Bethesda Hospital and then moved to Mercy Hamilton. Notably, she was one of the original five faculty members who established the nursing program at Miami University, where she devoted herself to educating future generations for 32 years as an Associate Professor of Nursing.  Jean was a parish council member at St. Mary Catholic Parish in Oxford and served a few terms as President of the Oxford Senior Center.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Jean was deeply involved in her community. She was a cherished member of Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and the NAACP, where she received a service award in recognition of her commitment to service. She also participated actively in the Nurse Association.

As a loving and devoted mother, Jean leaves behind her daughters, Sandra Freeman and Bernadette Dockery, along with her treasured grandchildren Tamar Wilkins and Taylor Freeman, and her great-grandchildren Diyana Darden, Jayden Mitchell, and Brooklyn Wilkins. Her loving presence will be profoundly missed.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, who undoubtedly shaped the remarkable woman she became, and her brother, Fred Thomas.
