Donald Olberding Obituary

Beloved husband of Irma Olberding, who chose him at the age of 13, and to whom he was married for 63 years. Fabulous father of Steve, Doug (Julie), Mike (Kate), the late Maria Olberding, Patti, and Bill (Melissa) Olberding. Cherished grandfather of Oliver, Noah, Max, Henry, and Ben. Loving brother of Tom (Delores) Olberding and Jim (Barbara) Olberding. Beloved brother-in-law to Bill (MinaLee) Dresmann, Bob (Nancy) Dresmann, Mary (Frank) Weibel, Diane (Bill) Korn, Kathie (Dale) Finger, and Don (Cheryl) Dresmann. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Rosemary Kelly Conrad and Mary Lou Diersing, brothers Gregory, and his identical twin, David Olberding.

Donald passed away at home on August 10, 2024, surrounded by family, at the age of 87 years. He was a graduate of Elder High School and Xavier University. After marrying the love of his life, he was stationed in Germany as a proud member of the 123rd AC&W Air Force Reserve Squadron in Landshut, Germany. The "Fighting 123rd" remained close, meeting monthly throughout the years. When Don made friends, he was a friend for life, regularly meeting with his buddies from kindergarten, grade school, high school, and college. He was a member of St. Bartholomew Church for 57 years and formed meaningful friendships with couples from the church as well as other prayer groups.

Don had a talent for bringing people together and loved to host a good party. His unbridled enthusiasm followed him wherever he went. He often gathered family and friends at the lake house or at home. When his daughter passed away, he shone as he coordinated various groups of friends and family to help produce the Reggae Run in Memory of Maria Olberding for twenty years, as well as making his famous "Olberding Chili" to feed thousands of runners and partygoers. Don was all about getting the family out for vacations and insisted that each kid bring a friend to add to the chaos. Many friends of his children considered him their second dad, as he was a solid, yet fun example of what a father should be. He cared deeply and loved greatly.

He was a hard worker with an excellent work ethic, which he passed on to his children and many of their friends and other family members who were employed by him. There wasn't a project that Don was afraid to tackle, whether he knew what he was doing or not. He was a tinkerer with things around the house and with cars. He was very involved with his kids' sports activities and loved keeping up with his grandchildren's sports, schooling, and other activities. He adored his grandsons.
