Burton Holthus Obituary

Burton E. Holthus, recently of Maple Knoll Village and previously of Wyoming, OH went home to his Lord and Savior on August 23, 2025 at the age of 95. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Florence, and is survived by a brother, C.G. ”Kelly” Holthus of York, Nebraska and three sons: Gregg (Lisa) of Wyoming, OH; Jim (Deb) of Bonita Springs, FL & Milford, OH; and Doug (Lisa) of Dublin, OH. He will be greatly missed by 9 adoring grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

“Burt” was born in 1930 on a farm in Bertrand, NE and lived through the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. He was the first one in his family to attend High School and graduated in 1947. He used to brag to his grandchildren that he was first in his class through the eighth grade (which they thought was impressive until they learned he was the only one in his class because he attended a one-room rural school!) Burt attended the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, graduating with a Business Major and Navy ROTC commission in 1951. He married Florence that June and immediately shipped out to Korea, serving on the Destroyer Escort, USS Moore, in the Sea of Japan. In 1952, he transferred to submarine service aboard the USS Tunny, the nation’s first Regulus class missile-carrying submarine.

Following the Navy, Burt joined Procter & Gamble in 1954 in Dallas, TX. He held numerous Finance positions during his 37-year career, retiring in 1991 as Associate Comptroller. In addition to Dallas and Cincinnati, his career took him and his family to Lexington, KY; Omaha, NE; and Geneva, Switzerland. The farm boy who loved his sixth-grade geography book got the chance to travel the world in Procter’s International Division. His focus was always on others, and Burt contributed his time and talents to numerous charitable and philanthropic endeavors. He held numerous lay positions at Christ Lutheran Church (Cincinnati) & Hope Lutheran Church (Bonita Springs, FL); He served as a founding board member and long-time Treasurer for The Garuna Foundation (Phoenix, AZ); he was on the board of Ohio Presbyterian Homes and Christ Hospital; he volunteered with Junior Achievement and United Way; and he helped establish the Maple Knoll Arboretum Committee.

Services will be held on Friday, August 29, 2025 at Christ Lutheran Church (3301 Compton Rd.) with visitation from 9:30 AM until time of funeral service at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Garuna Foundation or the Maple Knoll Communities Foundation.
