Obituary

Theresa I-Jen Chang Woltering passed peacefully at home, on Friday evening, June 16, 2023, at age 88, surrounded by her family.  There will be a visitation held at Paul R. Young Funeral Home in Mt. Healthy, Ohio on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 from 5 PM to 7 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at 10 AM at Old St. Mary's Catholic Church, 123 E. 13th St. Cincinnati, Ohio 45202.  The burial  to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

She is survived by her brother, Zhi Guang, (Lawrence), her sister, Mui Ngo (Teresa), her sister-in-law Lu Xia, (Mary), her children (and their spouses), her grandchildren (and their spouses), her great-grandchildren, and her nieces/nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, eight of her eleven siblings, and her beloved husband, Joseph (Bud) Woltering.

She was born In Shanghai China to Lianhui and ShanYu Chang on Oct 15,1934.  Her family was converted by Catholic missionaries.  Her faith gave her the strength to live through the Japanese invasion of China, the Communist Revolution, and the Cultural Revolution.  She became a medical professional and made her way to Hong Kong.  She then emigrated to the United States with the assistance of a Franciscan missionary priest, Fr. Elmer Thiele, OFM.  She settled in Cincinnati, OH, raised three children, married Joseph Woltering and enjoyed many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was always very devout, faithfully attended mass daily and prayed with devotion throughout the day. After her first stroke in 2011, she remained especially close with Our Lord even as dementia took a greater hold of her. She spent most of her remaining days in prayer; it was clear that she maintained a very prayerful peaceful cheerful state.

Her love for God was manifested in her loving care and dedication to her family, her friends, and her community. She loved to cook for others, and gave her beautiful, home-grown flowers to everyone she knew.  She continued to pray for everyone around her when she became unable to cook and garden.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Holy Family Academy, 10580 Pineview Rd, Manassas, Virginia 20111.
