Dr. Jay W. Baird – distinguished Professor of European History, dreamer, and child of the Ohio heartland – died on September 13, 2026 in Oxford, Ohio at the age of 90. Jay was the second child of Dr. Warren and Helen Baird, born on July 1, 1936. He spent his boyhood on Parkside Boulevard in Toledo, Ohio and spent lazy summers with favorite cousins and extended family in Augusta, Georgia, his father’s hometown. Jay’s father was a surgeon in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and his absence profoundly impacted the family in those years. Reserved and shy as a boy, Jay later blossomed with social confidence while engaging with customers in his first job as a butcher’s assistant at Kurt’s Market in Toledo. From that point on, Jay was a true extrovert who loved interacting with people and telling stories. He proudly attended Nathan Hale School and DeVilbiss High School, graduating in 1954.

It was in Jay’s next chapter of life, at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where he discovered the two great loves of his life: German language, history and scholarship, and most important, Sally Ann Eshelman of Circleville, Ohio. Jay and Sally were married in 1958 as Jay embarked on a history Ph.D. program at Columbia University. Jay’s research and teaching took them around the world with prolonged stops in New York City, Berlin, Munich, Washington, D.C., Pomona, CA, Cambridge, U.K., and Jerusalem. They started their family in California before settling down in Oxford, Ohio where Jay taught at his beloved Miami University for forty-one years.

Jay was a widely respected scholar of totalitarian propaganda and the use of mythology in the Third Reich era with numerous published works in this field. However, his greatest strength without question was at the podium in the lecture halls at Miami. A professor’s professor, Jay loved his students and being an educator. He brought boundless energy, passion, inspiration, enthusiasm, warmth, and humor to the classroom. He also mentored and encouraged students to pursue academic scholarship at the graduate level, much as he had been encouraged by a personal hero, Professor Guy Stern, while at Denison. Jay was a favorite of Miami students who recognized him with outstanding teaching and effective educator awards. He was most proud of receiving the Benjamin Harrison Medallion in 1998, Miami University’s highest career faculty award, honoring extraordinary and sustained contributions to teaching, research, and service. At Miami, Jay’s loves were his students, the landscape, and the red brick beauty of the view from his office over the Upham Hall arch in all seasons. He relished the cycle of the school year and the Old Slant Walk merging with the environment.

Jay loved family life and the comforts of home on the Ohio borderlands: good food and wine, changing of the seasons, stocking his bird feeders, growing tomatoes in summer, reading and dreaming by a crackling fire in winter. He and Sally also loved to travel with friends and spent meaningful time in Cuba, Europe, and on safari in Africa. Sally was his lodestar, and the fifteen years since her passing in 2011 were never quite the same. Jay took special delight in his eight grandchildren and liked to give special books at Christmastime. He was one of a kind and will be missed tremendously by his family and friends. Jay was predeceased by wife Sally, his parents, sister Nancy Baird Rudolph, brother Jeffrey, and beloved granddaughter Ash Fusa Baird. He is survived by his three children, Lisa, Bryan (Sayuri), and Stanford (Anna), grandchildren Ciara, Savannah Sally, Lexington, Sommer, Cameron, Griffin, and Joshua, and great-grandchildren Luca and Toki. Jay’s family extends special thanks to the nurses and staff of The Knolls of Oxford and Hospice of Cincinnati who were exemplary in their care for Jay in his final chapter.
