Daniel Michael Ferguson was born in Detroit, Michigan to Josephine (nee Rovenski) and ShirelFerguson. He attended Good Shepherd School in Lincoln Park, Michigan and began his scouting career.  He was a very good student (except for handwriting). At age 13 Dan reached Eagle Scout, the youngest at the time to do so in Michigan. He attended Holy Redeemer High School in Detroit. His father and uncles introduced him to the lifelong joys of hunting and fishing as a young boy in Michigan. Sailing, running, biking, swimming became an integral part of his life and at the University of Notre Dame he played on and helped rejuvenate the budding ND Hockey Team. He then went on to do two Masters Degrees in Business and Accounting at Stanford University in California.

Dan met his wife, Rene, in Toronto through a Stanford friend and they married in August of 1968. Dan – a man who never quit-- moved into university teaching from 1968 through 1971 – at Texas
Southern University in Houston for a school year on a National Teaching Fellowship and then The University of Minnesota - Duluth, Business School until 1972. In Duluth while teaching computerized
accounting, he worked with the Printing Arts professor to do a "Computer and Art" seminar – quite groundbreaking at the time! Joining The First National Bank of Chicago (now JPMorgan Chase) he
enjoyed 15 years of doing innovative engineering projects in electronic data interchange (EDI). In 1987 he established his own company, The EDI Group, doing research and seminars in the US, Canada, the UK and other countries in Europe.

Dan's family, Anna, Julia, Phillip and his wife, Rene were very important to him and he was a great support to them, encouraging hard work at school and even coaching and refereeing boys soccer for many years. Many weekend days were spent traveling to swimming, volley ball and water polo meets for Anna and Julia and soccer matches for Phil. Dan was also very supportive of Rene's work as a graphic designer, meeting planner, theatre costume and set designer and position as administrative assistant to the principal at Holmes Elementary School.

Dan returned to university level teaching at IIT in Chicago after selling his successful company and in 2010 was accepted to do his PhD and teach at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. In 2013 at age 70 he received his PhD in Engineering Education and was immediately hired onto the faculty of the College of Engineering Education at Purdue. Dan continued his work there managing and growing the worldwide CATME project which assists professors in forming balanced teams and teaching students how to be effective in teams and at peer evaluation. He retired by choice at age 80 on December 31, 2022, as his almost 5-year battle with the effects of sequential glioblastoma multiforme brain tumors and their treatments were compromising his abilities.

Dan is survived by his loving, dedicated children, Anna (Joseph Robas), Julia Ferguson (Jonathan Bauer), and Phillip Ferguson and wife, Rene (nee Gamble), sisters Dorothy (Ron) Tank, Mary Jo Ferguson, and two grandchildren, James Bauer and Amelia Robas; nieces and nephews and their children in Canada and the US and many business colleagues and friends. He will be missed.
